Introduction
Patiala has been cultural and
academic center of northern India. The erstwhile rulers of Patiala state
were great patrons of art and culture. Thus under the Maharajas, Patiala
had developed into an important educational centre. It was the first city
in this part of the country to have a Degree College- the Mohindra
College- established in 1870. This city has the credit of setting up the
first printing press in Punjab – the famous Printing Press of Munshi Naval
Kishore and for manufacturing the first Punjabi Typewriter.
Today, Patiala is an important seat of
learning with a full-fledged University, a Government Medical College, a
Dental College, an Ayurvedic College and an Engineering College.

The inauguration of this university
took place on 24th June, 1962. After the Hebrew University of Israel, this
is the only University to be named after a language. Initially, the
foremost task assigned to this university was "to promote Punjabi studies,
to provide for research in Punjabi literature, to undertake measures for
the development of Punjabi language.Regarding its commitment to the cause
of Punjabi,
the
punjabi language department of the university has translated a number of
non-Punjabi classics into Punjabi. Punjabi culture has also received a
fillip through diligent and scholarly work on projects like Encyclopedia
of Sikhism.
The University has since evolved into a
multi-faceted, multi-faculty educational institution with over fifty-five
teaching and research departments in the fields of Humanities, Sciences,
Fine Arts and Space Physics.
The
University has three regional centres, namely, The Guru Kashi Regional
Centre at Bathinda, The Guru Kashi Campus at Talwandi Sabo and The Nawab
Sher Mohammad Khan Institute of Advanced Studies in Urdu, Persian and
Arabic at Malerkotla.Punjabi University, Patiala, has set up an Extension
Centre for computer education at Jaito.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and
Technology, Patiala
It is a premier engineering
institute of Northern India which has been upgraded to a deemed
university. It offers engineering courses in various branches to students
– Indian and N.R.I’s.
Established
in 1956, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) started with
the goal of providing undergraduate and postgraduate education in
Engineering and Technology, a close interaction with industry, and a
strong emphasis on research. TIET has since grown steadily in size and
activities during the last four decades of its existence. Over 7400
engineers have graduated from TIET. In recognition of its achievements,
TIET was granted full autonomy and the status of a Deemed University in
1985 by the University Grants Commission.
The Institute offers a variety of
undergraduate programmes leading to Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree
and postgraduate programmes leading to Master of Engineering (M.E.),Master

Government Medical College and Rajindra
Hospital, Patiala
The college was started by the PEPSU
Government in October, 1953. It consists of an administrative block and
self contained blocks for the basic clinical departments
Rajindra Hospital, Patiala with 900 beds
was attached to the college in early 1954. The hospital is equipped with
all the latest apparatus and instruments to make it fit for imparting
clinical teaching to the students.
A Tuberculosis and chest Diseases hospital
with a capacity of 161 beds and a primary health centres at Bhadson, Kauli
and Tripuri are attached with the college for teaching purposes.
The college is famous in India as GOMCO is
affiliated to Baba Farid University at Health Sciences, Faridkot(Punjab)
for MBBS, BDS and various other courses.
There are four hostels, two for girls and
two for boys. In addition to this, there is one hostel in the Rajindra

Government Mohindra College, Patiala
This college was established in 1870
by Maharaja Mohindra Singh. Its building is a wonderful peace of
architecture. It was the only degree college between Delhi and Lahore and
it was affiliated to Calcutta University and It attracted students from
all over the country. One of the premier institutes of Patiala in the
disciplines of Humanities and Sciences.
